2009 Cherry Queen Tarryn Maas

For as many years as the festival has been going on, there has been one lucky female, in the Senior graduating class of North East High School, becoming the North East Firemen's Cherry Festival Cherry Queen. The process to become Cherry Queen begins right at the High School, where the Senior class nominates 10 of their female classmates to be candidates for this prestigious award. After the selection of the 10 in mid-May, the Cherry Festival Queen committee meets with the candidates on several occasions, interviewing the potential Queens, and determining the qualities of each. The panel of judges, comprised of members of the community, rates the candidates on several characteristics, and slowly narrows the group down to the Final Five candidates, one of whom will be crowned Queen. The Final Five go through several more interviews, and eventually are treated to dinner by the escorting firemen. Escorting firemen are selected by the committee to escort a candidate to dinner, appear in pictures, and onto the stage, where the Queen will be crowned on the Thursday of the Festival at 6:30 PM on the main stage at Heard Park.

"Honestly the best part of the whole experience was getting to know the firemen. They treated the entire court like a part of the "family" and allowed us to go "behind the scenes" and get involved in different parts of the festival. They are all great people and what they do for our community is even more amazing."- states Phillips.
