The 2010 North East Firemen's Cherry Festival's preparations are well underway! With the beginning of the fest rapidly approaching on July 13th, 2010, the festival committee is working countless hours trying to make this the best fest yet!

The 65th annual summer event is going to feature many of the classic favorites that have kept people gathering in beautiful North East Pennsylvania for the past 65 years! The festival will feature the firemen's fresh cut fries, "almost famous" sausage sub sandwiches and cotton candy. The firemen will also run their chuck-a-luck tent, the pill game, bingo tent and the money tent, where there are numerous chances to win many fabulous cash prizes! All proceeds from these tents go directly to the volunteer firefighters/EMT's of the North East Fire Department, who provide fire, rescue and EMS services for the community of North East and surrounding areas, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year.

Saturday afternoon, at 4:00pm, Main Street in North East is the place to be! The street will be closed, and will come alive with the sounds of many professional, amateur, and high school bands, multiple performing acts, and, of course, fire apparatus of all shapes, colors and sizes. The parade still remains the largest volunteer firemen's parade in the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. We encourage any groups interested in being part of the parade to contact the parade committee. Click here to e-mail the parade committee.

The festival also brings in outside vendors to sell their products and promote their business, giving the Cherry Festival an "authentic" midway feeling. If you're interested in becoming a vendor, please fill out the online application on the vendor page of this website.

The Festival will feature nightly ride-a-rama's, along with 2 sessions of ride-a-rama on Saturday. The rides will be provided by Midway Rides of Utica, who have consistently provided the Cherry Festival with safe, quality rides for kids of all ages!

The Cherry Festival committee looks forward to opening night to show off the culmination of many months of hard work by ALL members of the North East Fire Department to make the fest the best it can be!

History of the Festival: The North East Firemen's Cherry Festival began 65 years ago in 1945. The festival was located behind the North East VFW for the first few years. After the first few years, the firemen discovered that the VFW was just not a large enough venue for the festival, and the decision was made to move behind the then located Heard School. Years later, the festival is still located at the same location on South Lake Street, however, it is no longer held behind the Heard School, as it was demolished in the late 1990's. The Fire Department uses this property, now known as Heard Park yearly and has access to all the restroom and bandstand capabilities that the park offers. In addition to the location of the festival, there are also many other "timeless" traditions of the festival. The first is the Grand Marshal. The Grand Marshal is a honorary fire fighter that is chosen by Crescent Hose on odd numbered years and Fuller Hose on even numbered years that is the leader of the parade. Another tradition is the Cherry Queen. Over the years, a lucky female in the senior class at North East HS has been the Cherry Queen. More information about Cherry Queens can be found on their page within this website.

Over the years, several improvements have been made to the equipment and resources available to manage and operate the festival. For several years, the festival offices had no place to call home. In the late 1990's, an office was built on the Heard Park property and was dedicated to a person who held the chairman position for several years, Mr. James Adamus. In addition, the former "fry barn" which was an actual barn looking structure was converted into a tent for more space and better working conditions. The Fire Department has purchased some of the best, state of the art frying equipment and grills, along with having their own established hot water system and ventilation system. Under the ground of Heard Park are several feet of conduit, which house the festivals electrical lines, thus removing the wires from above ground and making the grounds safer for all.

DISCLAIMER: The Cherry Festival staff will do everything in their power to make the festival an enjoyable time for all persons. However, those appearing intoxicated or under the influence of illicit drugs and alcohol, along with those not abiding by the rules posted on the sign above, and on the grounds, will be asked to leave. Also, the ride-a-rama's are good for only one session, and no refunds will be issued for any reason. We hope that you have a wonderful time and thank you for supporting the North East Fire Department.
